My favorite teacher gift we have given:

Grow Paperwhite Bulbs

"A single wildflower given in love is worth more than a dozen perfect roses given with indifference" - Anonymous

Paperwhites (Narcissus tazetta) are a popular bulb to force inside. They do not require a cold period and white, fragrant flowers usually bloom 2-3 weeks after being started.

To start them, place bulb in a vase or jar using marbles, stones or some other decorative material under and around the bulbs.(I used jelly jars and juice glasses from the thrift shop and cut up cheap strands of beaded garland)

Include directions: Fill with water up to the top of the middle of the bulb and maintain water height when you are ready to begin forcing the bulb to bloom.

This was a very well received gift. A lot of fun and most people gave me updates on where their plant was at in the growing process and how many blooms theirs had, in comparison to others'!  Funny! I bought the bulbs in bulk at Costco that year, but I have seen them at WalMart and Home Depot as well.
